A visit to the craft brew section of a liquor store provides immediate proof of the continued explosion of craft brewing. The shelves are packed with quirky new brews with funky packaging. When Russ Heissner, the first head brewer at craft brew pioneer Harpoon, was ready to enter the market with his own brand, he looked to GrayMatter to help set it apart from the crowd.
Barrel House Z is founded on the principle of collaboration while brewing barrel aged beer in limited-edition batches for varying periods of time: no aging (or “In The Buff”), 1 month, 3 months or 6 months. The packaging had to stand out on the shelves while still delivering all the important information to the customer — the amount of time aged, the collaborator name and the barrel lot information. The result was a unique look and feel that can adapt to the ever-changing offerings.
